THE Bai nationality has a population of 1.13 million, of which over 80 percent live in Dali, Yunnan Province. Their costumes and clothing ornaments are bright, lively and harmonious in colours. Generally, Bai women wear narrow-sleeved shirts of light colour, dark-coloured jerkins with round collars and head dresses ornamented with tassels of colourful embroideries. For the lower part of the body, they wear loose blue trousers and embroidered shoes with upturned toes. Besides silver earrings and bracelets, women often wear on the right front a string of silver plates from which hang toothpicks, earpicks, little scissors and other daily neccessities.
THE Miaos are scattered mainly in Guizhou, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Hubei provinces and Guangxi. They have a population of 5.03 million. The styles of Miao women's costume and ornaments are extremely rich and colourful. In western Hunan, Miao women's costumes include a jacket open from the side front and always go with skirts, they are all pleated and decorated with gorgeous embroideries. According to Miao tradition, silver ornaments are a symbol of brightness. A complete set of the silver ornaments for women includes horns, crowns, flowers, hairpins, earrings, necklets, capelets and others. Each kind of silver ornament is decorated with motifsof its own. The head dress motifs, for instance, include phoenix, magpie, plum blossom, golden rooster, etc.
WITH a population of 839,000 the Dai people are distributed mainly over the western and southern Yunnan Province. Dai women wear tubular skirts decorated with figured patterns. The skirt's style, colour and pattern vary with areas, customs, habits and age, and the length is usually extended to the insteps. For the upper part, they wear narrow-sleeved close-fitting short jackets extending to the waist. The jackets are mostly made of light, soft, thin and transparent fabrics.
